Abandoned baby doing well with foster parents

The abandoned baby found at Winkogo near Bolgatanga being watched over by a dog is doing well and has been given a name, Bere-Ansung Princess Agansua, by the Chief of the area, Naba Moses Agansua.

Baby Princess is presently one month old and is doing well.

She was found on May 31st at 0600 hours.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Winkogo, Naba Agansua said the first name of the baby meant, ‘her future will be good’. He said since God chose a dog to watch over the child, she would survive the difficulties of life and grow to be a responsible and prosperous person.

He commented that even though such a phenomenal incident had not happened in his life time, it was such similar events that gave many ethnic groups in Ghana their various totems, as such heroic animals were usually revered and not allowed to be killed or eaten by any member of the clan.

The Chief said the baby was brought to him that morning and he directed that she be sent for a health check after which he, together with the foster mother reported to the Police and gave their statements.

Mrs Joyce Apaana Nsoh, a cloth weaver whose dog cuddled the baby over night, found the two together about 50 meters away from her house, on her way to her rice farm.

She said the six year old dog, named Peace, could not be found at bed time and that was a bit alarming as it usually did not leave the house on its own for long.

“When I heard the children saying they had seen the dog that morning, I quickly went closer to see why it was lying down only to see the baby cuddled in its limps and I immediately picked her up”, she added.

Mrs Nsoh, a mother of three children, who is taking care of the baby said it was rather sad to see the naked baby on the cold as the cloth that was used to wrap her had been pushed aside and the only warmth she got was from the dog.

The baby was sent to the clinic for a check up and the infected umbilical cord was cleaned and treated.**
