About eight huge sheds in the Sokoban Wood Village in the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi have been completely ravaged by fire.

The inferno started at about 10:00 pm at the lumber sellers section of the enclave on Thursday, June 29, 2017 and raged into Friday dawn June 30, 2017.

It took about five fire engines from the Ashanti regional command of the Fire service to douse the flames.

The wood village currently has some six hundred and thirty-seven sheds occupied by carpenters, machine operators and wood sellers who call their side the lumber services.

An executive member of the Logs and Lumber Sellers’ Association, Adom Nyamaa who spoke to Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote- Fumador indicated that the wood lost to the flames could be valued in the region of two million cedis.

He narrated, “We had closed and left when at about 10:00 pm, our watchmen called us and raised alarm of a fire outbreak. We called the fire service and they got here when the fire was raging high.”

“I can say that about eight huge sheds have burned totally to ashes with even the roofing sheets charred. Wood worth over 2 million cedis have now turned into ashes here,” he lamented.

Mr Nyamaa called for government to come to their aid with some intervention since some workers and their apprentices had lost their sources of livelihood.

This fire incident is the first major fire outbreak to hit the enclave since the workers were relocated from the Anloga Wood Village to Sokoban even though some minor incidents of sawdust fires have been recorded in the past.
