5-year-old boy drowns in swimming pool

Members of a family at Jisonayili, a suburb of the Tamale Metropolis, are accusing the management of Discovery Hotel in Tamale of neglect, resulting in the death of their 5-year-old son, Wumpini Mubarak.

The boy drowned in the hotel’s swimming pool after he reportedly went missing on Thursday around 4pm.

According to an uncle, Salifu Tia Alhassan, who narrated the incident to Citi News, they searched for him since morning on that fateful day, and all attempts for security personnel at the hotel to allow them search for the boy on their premises failed; only to find his body in the pool on Friday morning.

He explained that security lapses at the facility often makes it easy for children to sneak into the facility to play and urged authorities to do something about the situation.

The police have visited the scene and recovered the body for autopsy.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ebenezer Tetteh, Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police command, confirmed the tragic incident to Citi News and said the body has been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s morgue for autopsy.

He disclosed one Hamza Yakubu, the swimming pool attendant, has been picked by the police to assist in their investigation.

He urged parents to give more protection to their children and ensure that they are not exposed to danger.

Attempts to speak to the management of the facility, however, proved futile.
