A 23-year-old illegal miner (galamseyer) has drowned in a pit at Amadaa near Nkrumah-Nkwanta in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The incident happened on Monday, 24 April 2018 around 6:00pm when the galamseyer, Abu Ibrahim, accompanied his colleague to mine gold in the area.

Mining equipment used by the duo were said to have fallen into the galamsey pit which was filled with water.

Attempts to swim to pick the equipment resulted in the death of Abu.

The body of the deceased has still not been found, as a rescue team has been dispatched to the galamsey site to search for the body.

Assembly Member for the Nkrumah-Nkwanta Electoral Area, Mr Martin Prempeh, who narrated the incident to Adehye FM's Elisha Adarkwah, said chiefs in the area were also performing customs to help the rescue team find the remains of the deceased.
