John Mahama most marketable for NDC – Sampson Ahi

Former President of Ghana, John Mahama has been touted as the most marketable and best bet among other contenders to lead the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to victory in the 2020 elections.

According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bodi, Sampson Ahi, Mr.Mahama remains the most marketable and well placed to salvage the country and lead their party to back to reclaim power from the incumbent New Patriotic Party.

His comments follow, the former President’s decision to formally communicate his intention to contest the party’s vacant flagbearer position.

Already, over 94 MPs have declared their support for JM, and according to Sampson Ahi, the movement started in April 2017, and they have been working behind the scenes all this period, and they feel he[John Mahama] is the only person who can salvage this country.

“As MPs we decided to come together and today that he has declared he was contemplating whether to come again or not and our initial mission was to get him convinced to accept to contest as the flagbearer of our party.

Now that he has accepted to contest for the NDC flagbearship primaries, we are now going to move to the field and support him and campaign with him, so that he will have assurance from us that we are not just imploring him to come and contest but practicalising whatever assurances we are giving to him. And so today’s meeting is to reecho our commitment towards JM contesting and becoming our flagbearer and contest the 2020 general elections”Sampson Ahi told B&FT in an interview.

Mr Mahama now joins a host of other aspirants including, Alban Bagbin, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Sylvester Mensah, Joshua Alabi and some others who have already expressed interest in the vacant position.

Nine persons have already written to the party officially to inform it about their intentions to lead the party for the 2020 presidential election.

The NDC on Thursday, August 2, 2018, announced that its presidential hopefuls could start campaigning for the election slated for December 7, 2018, but they must officially inform the party.



Disappointed in Bagbin

Mr. Ahi also bemoaned the utterances of Second Deputy Speaker, Alban Bagbin and maintained that he is damaging his political career with his utterances,

“I don’t expect that Bagbin will engage in such pedestrian politics, I am so disappointed because he is somebody I respect a lot and I thought that he was going to remain at that level but descending into this type of gutter politics is unfortunate”.



Mahama wins 2012

In December 2012, John Mahama became President of Ghana for a four-year term after a contentious election which was eventually resolved after an eight-month-long tussle at the Supreme Court over the validity of the results.

The results were challenged by the New Patriotic Party which contended that over-voting occurred at 1,722 polling stations, while voting without biometric verification occurred at 2,020 polling stations.
