Following remarks by former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, that the GH¢50 million bail condition placed on Chairman Wontumi was unrealistic, private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, holds a different view.
Dr Bawumia had earlier accused the government of deliberately imposing an impossible bail amount to prevent Wontumi's timely release.
However, Martin Kpebu, while refuting the claim on TV3’s Key Points said Dr Bawumia had received the wrong advice.
He argued that the former vice president should have focused on the actual charges levelled against Wontumi rather than questioning the bail conditions.
“I heard the former Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, complaining that the bail condition is excessive. I believe he got the wrong advice. He should be asking about the charges against Wontumi instead,” Kpebu stated.
He explained that bail terms are determined by the amount of money involved in the investigation.
Kpebu urged critics of the bail amount to first examine the facts of the case.
This, he said, will help determine whether the amount is justified or excessive.
Meanwhile, Wontumi remains in EOCO's custody despite having met the bail conditions.
EOCO officers were unable to verify the documents of his surety, Bryan Acheampong, after receiving notification of a new application requesting a review of the bail terms.
