The Greater Accra Regional chairperson for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ade Coker has disputed media reports that the regional chairpersons of the umbrella family, have endorsed former President John Dramani Mahama to lead the party as candidate for election 2020.

According to him, the statement they issued was to call on the former president to ‘’consider’’ running in 2020.

The statement from the chairpersons issued after a meeting with the former president, in Cantonments on Thursday, called on the president to embark on a ‘Thank You Tour’ to thank Ghanaians for supporting the NDC over the past years.

They also asked him to consider the call from teaming supporters and Ghanaians to represent the party in 2020.

The statement which went viral on social media had different interpretations with some claiming that the chairpersons have endorsed Mr. Mahama.

But Mr. Ade Coker, said the chairpersons did not endorse Mr. Mahama as speculated by others rather they asked the former president, who lost to his rival President Nana Addo in 2016, to ‘’consider’’ representing the party.

Meanwhile, former President John Dramani Mahama had said any attempt to declare his intention to contest will distract the party’s restructuring activities.

According to the former president, a lot of people have called on him to make his declaration known but addressing party supporters, at the peace walk organized by the party in the Central region over the weekend.

He said the point he has made is that ‘’my declaration of my intention to run or not to run will distract the attention of the party from the work we have to do.’’
