Voters register: EC Advisory Committee ineffective – Prof. Gyampo

Political Science lecturer, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has slammed the Electoral Commission Eminent Advisory Committee describing the body as unproductive so far.

According to him, the 21-member body chaired by a former Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short has failed to make its existence felt in the ongoing brouhaha over the compilation of the new voters' register.

The main opposition NDC has taken a strong position to fight the EC’s resolve to start the compilation of a new voters’ register at the end of June ahead of this year’s elections.

Leading members of the party including General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia and National Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi have been quoted as saying they will fight with their last blood to stop the compilation of the voters' register.

Speaking to host Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5FM, Prof. Gyampo urged the EC Advisory Committee to up its game and ensure that there’s peace among the EC and the various political parties.

“The EC Advisory Committee should be up and doing. By now they should have by now gone to the ruling NPP and told them in a nice way to tone down. Then also go to the NDC and ask them what their grievances are. Then based on that they know how to advise the EC on the way forward."

"You first engage the major political parties individually before you convene a larger meeting. So before the larger meeting is held the Advisory Committee would have already calm tensions. I think they have so far held a meeting with the political parties and even that one it was like adding petrol to fire. I don’t think they have done well.”
