Voter apathy may affect NPP in December 7 elections - Lecturer warns

Political Science Lecturer at the Methodist University-Ghana Dr. Osei Bonsu is convinced voter apathy would affect the chances of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7 polls.

According to him, the situation will be fueled by disparities within the party.

Dr Osei Bonsu also mentioned the disqualification of some parliamentary aspirants from the party’s upcoming primaries as another reason.


He has, therefore, admonished the party’s leadership to mend their fences after the primaries.

Dr. Osei Bonsu stated these while speaking to Nana Yaw Opare on the Yensempa morning show on Onua FM.

He noted that the situation would adversely and drastically affect the party’s chances of winning more parliamentary seats and in the presidential race.

He censured the party’s leadership for allowing complacency to set in instead of uniting for a stronger forefront in attaining a triumphant victory come December 7.

Dr. Osei, however, stated that disqualification in itself is allowed in any political race but that must be done in a professional way to circumvent discrepancies.

He expressed fret over an ostensibly hasty statement made by the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (a.k.a Chairman Wuntumi) that all incumbent Members of Parliament in the Region would have been allowed to go unopposed.

The statement, according to the lecturer, has brought discomfort among party supporters, compelling the disqualified aspirants to consider going independent.


The development, Dr. Osei Bonsu has explained, would affect chances of the party especially in the Ashanti Region, which is its stronghold, and has recommended to the party leadership to settle agitations caused as soon as possible to avert ruinous consequences in the December 7 polls.
