Today in 2017: I will continue to pray for Akufo-Addo – Rawlings

Ghana’s former president, Jerry John Rawlings, in 2017 stated that he was constantly praying for President Akufo-Addo because he was confident in him fighting corruption in the country.

Mr. Rawlings added that Nana Akufo-Addo had certain principles and values that differentiated him from other statemen.

Barely a year after his statement, Mr. Rawlings expressed regret in the Akufo-Addo-led government for turning a blind eye on some corruption cases in the country.

According to him, some NPP appointees were still in office despite the serious cases of corruption leveled against them.

“Any crooks and/or personnel in positions of authority exposed by institutional investigations as having been corrupted by the power and authority they wield must be thrown out and treated with the contempt they deserve before such institutions imbibe their deformed characters,” said Rawlings at a conference of cadres and activists of the revolution in Kumasi.

In his view, the former Foreign Minister has “certain principles and values” which could help in the fight against corruption.

Mr. Rawlings who is also the founder of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has developed some kind of love for the President even when in opposition.

This affection by the self-acclaimed anti-corruption crusader has been condemned by members of the NDC with many blaming him for their defeat in the 2016 general elections.

But addressing a group of movie actors who paid a courtesy call on him at his Ridge residence, he respect President Akufo-Addo he is committed to fighting corruption.

“People think I love that man to high heavens. No. But I respect him for certain principles and values. “We are very fortunate also that somebody like Nana Akufo-Addo” he added.

Former President Rawlings said he will continue to pray for the President for him to succeed and accelerate Ghana’s development.
