There’re competent doctors in Ghana to attend to Bawumia – GMA fires back

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has responded to the naysayers who claim there are no competent medical doctors in Ghana reason the Vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was flown to the UK for treatment.

The association has indicated that there competent doctors in the country who are very committed to their work and could have taken care of the second gentleman of the land if offered the opportunity.

“As far as I know, doctors in Ghana are very very competent to the extent that when you interact with those outside the country some of our members are far better” Vice President of the association, Dr. Frank Serebour told Abusua Fm in Kumasi on Monday.

His comments follow numerous claims Dr. Bawumia was flown to the United Kingdom due to the fact that doctors in the country do not have the capacity to take care of his ailment.

“The situation has been a norm among countries in the African continent especially politicians”. Dr Serebour noted.

Mr. Kinsley Aboagye-Gyadu, the Deputy Health minister indicated earlier that Dr. Bawumia will receive “better health care” in the UK than Ghana.

This statement has not gone well with most Ghanaians especially medical doctors who say they feel insulted.

Nevertheless, Dr. Serebour has debunked the assertion by saying there are competent health workers in the country adding that politicians must be blamed as they have always “paid lips services to health facilities in the country”

He, however, accepted the fact that the health system in the country is not perfect and as such, there is the need for them to work towards perfection.

“If leaders of the country patronize health facilities in the country, it will add up to our ability to work to achieve the expected levels”. He said

According to the GMA, doctors must not be blamed so much on the issue of competency.

“There are times you get challenges, for instance, when you realize that availability of a machine or medicine could save patient’s life yet you do not have it at your disposal, what would you do? In that sense, some may say the doctor is incompetent, but the issue the system has not provided us with the needed facilities”. He stressed

Sharing his experience as a medical doctor, GMA Vice President sadly revealed how on several instances patients die under his care due to lack of equipment to perform his duty of saving lives.
