Solomon Owusu to petition for removal of Sophia Akuffo from Council of State

A member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has hinted at his plans to petition for the removal of former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo from the Council of State.

According to him, Akuffo’s recent comments regarding the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo constitute a breach of the oath of secrecy as a member of the Council of State.

Owusu expressed the view that Akuffo’s actions could set a dangerous precedent in the country, criticising her for also serving as a witness for Justice Torkornoo during the Pwamang-led committee’s probing of petitions against Torkornoo.

“I'm happy to announce to you also that she will be the next person that I will petition to be removed from the Council of State for breaching of oath of secrecy. What she has done is so dangerous, it must never be encouraged in this country. And I'm serving notice to her that I will go after her. We need to rid this country of such people.

“She has occupied the position of the Chief Justice of this country before. If you go to the Council of State, she is in charge of the legal, constitutional and petitions committee. Every petition that goes to the Council of State, it goes to her first. She took part in the consultation with the President to establish the prima facie case. You knew all the issues surrounding it, how on earth would you then turn and go back to the committee and serve as a witness?” he said on TV3 on September 24, 2025.

His comments follow Akuffo’s condemnation of the removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office as Chief Justice, arguing that her successor was not given a fair hearing.

Akuffo made the remarks in an interview on TV3 on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

“She did not get a fair trial. Even though it is not a trial strictly speaking, it was handled as though it were a treason trial,” the Member of the Council of State said.
