Residents of Kpone commend President for suspending referendum

Kpone residents have commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for suspending the December 17 referendum because they did not understand it.

In a survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency, they said it was time they made decisions for themselves based on their understanding of issues and not by political parties' prodding.

They added that it was about time such national exercises were undertaken without political interference adding that the level of political manipulations in the public education of Ghanaians on the referendum was regrettable.

They expected the government to task the various stakeholders to sensitize the people adequately on the exercise if they had plans of bringing the referendum back.

If the President has plans of bringing the referendum back before the 2020 election, then he should quickly sensitize the citizens before the elections as there were a lot of national issues which needed to be addressed in an election year so the needed attention would not be put only on the elections, Mr Philip Enin, said.

Some residents however said they preferred the prevailing local government system which was devoid of partisan politicking as that was suited the needs of the people and therefore they did not expect the government to bring back thr referendum.

Some residents also expressed their disappointment in the President redrawing the referendum as they assumed that public resources had been put into the process adding it would have been prudent to intensify sensitisation on it instead of aborting it to start all over again as that was a waste of resources.

“I am highly disappointed in the President, they used the tax payers money in educating the people from one region to the other only for him to suspend it and another set of money would be used in sensitizing the people if the whole exercise would be brought back, I think this is a complete waste of time and money as another set of the tax payer’s money would be used again if the process would be introduced again” Madam Fati Ibrahim said

Some however said they were not sure of the whole process as they had lost interest in Ghanaian politics because the most important issues were not being addressed.
