Religious groups putting pressure on govt to lift ban on social gathering – NGOs in Health alleges

The Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health (GCNH) is alleging that some religious groups are trying to put pressure on government to relax the measures put in place to curb the spread of coronavirus.

“We do not support this at all,” the Coalition said in a press release issued on Wednesday, May 13.

This comes after GCNH conducted a survey across the country on the impact of the measures so far in the combat against the viral disease.

It observed, among others, that there is a “huge” misconception around the use of the face masks.

“This is dangerous for Ghana, since ‘proper and consistent use of the nose/face mask has great impact of breaking the chain of the spread of the virus’.”

It also observed that since community spread is beginning to be the chief mode of transmission, metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) must be supported with logistics to play a significant role.

Furthermore, areas where traditional and religious bodies play active roles in education, support and advocacy, impacts and successes are visibly felt.

“We need to support such initiatives.”

The Coalition, therefore, appealed to the Covid-19 Trust Fund to support MMDAs financially in their activities.
