Political Parties appeal to Police to uphold rule of law

Political Parties in the Eastern Region, have urged the Police to uphold the rule of law by being firm and fair to all manner of persons irrespective of their political persuasions as Ghanaians hope for peaceful campaigns and elections.

According to the parties, developments at the just ended biometric voter registration had brought to fore many challenges including the need for the Police to be fair and firm in their performance in events leading to the elections in December.

During a dialogue between the Eastern Regional Police Command and representatives of political parties in Koforidua on Friday, the political parties maintained that the Police had a crucial role to play in the quest for peaceful polls in December.

The political parties at the dialogue were the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), represented by Mr. Seth Mpere and Mr. Albert Kwaku Zah, Regional Chairman and Secretary respectively, People’s National Party (PNC), was represented by Mr. Mohamed Abdulai, Acting Regional Chairman.

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) was represented by Mr. Peter Agyei Yeboah, acting Regional Organizer while the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was represented by Mr. Frank Annor-Dompreh, Regional Youth Organizer.

The parties raised several issues including the defacing of posters, wearing of opponents T-shirts to other party’s rallies and programmes that could result in chaos in events leading to the elections.

They therefore urged the Police to be proactive when reports of those issues were made to them.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kwabena Gyamera-Yeboah, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, assured the parties of the police’s willingness and ability to discharge their duties without fear or favour and called for their cooperation in the pursuit of peace, law and order.

He said as part of processes of ensuring a peaceful election before, during and after the December polls, all the political parties should furnish the police administration with their programmes of activities to enable them prepare adequately for security arrangements to forestall any problem.

The Regional Commander announced to them that as part of measures to ensure a peaceful election in the region, there would be a peace walk to be participated by political parties to create awareness for peace.**
