Parliament commended for introducing sign language interpretation

Parliament of Ghana Parliament of Ghana

The Parliament of Ghana has been commended for some reforms it undertook to employ the services of sign language interpreters to enhance the work of the house.

The reforms were announced, Tuesday, October 30, by the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye on the resumption of parliament after recess.

He noted the innovation will enhance the work of parliament and bridge the gap between the public and the house.

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, took his turn on the floor of the house to praise the initiative.

“Let me commend you for the novelty of the sign language you have introduced as part of your reforms”, he said

He continued to hail the Speaker saying “you have paid your dues to persons with disability to appreciate the work we do.”

The Tamale South, however, observed the fonts size on the parliament order paper are not friendly. He asked that the communications department of the house takes notice and makes amends.

“Except to say that the communications department must just observe the fonts as we are looking and reduce the size. When Mr. Speaker was himself giving his remarks he almost got covered by it, technology-wise it can be repositioned or resituated”, he observed.

This is it is the first time the legislature has employed the services of sign language interpreters.
