Our journey towards victory 2020 starts today – Mahama to Madina residents

Former President John Dramani Mahama today joined Muslims at the Madina central mosque to celebrate his win as the elected flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

John Mahama will lead the party to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties in the 2020 General Elections after his party members chose him over six others.

Addressing the people after the prayers at the Madina Social Welfare, the NDC flagbearer said “I would like to thank the Imam and other dignitaries present for their prayers today. I will like to also say a very big thank you to those who accompanied us here for prayers. We began with prayers and now we are ending with prayers. We are thanking God for the victory he has given us. As we all know we held our presidential primaries to elect out presidential candidate come 2020”.

He expressed gratitude to the people for their massive endorsement and admonished them to keep the same attitude come 2020.

“I am here with two of the candidates, Goosie Tanooh and Nurudeen Alhassan. The minority leader in parliament is also here, Muntaka Mubarak is also here with our regional chairman. I won’t be able to mention all the names of dignitaries present. We would like to say a very big thank you and to thank God for the victory he has given us.”



Background

The NDC held its presidential primary across all 275 constituencies on Saturday, 23rd February 2019.

Certified results from the Electoral Commission showed that John Mahama secured an overwhelming 213,487 votes representing 95.23 percent of the total valid votes cast with the other six contenders managing with about 4 percent.

Mahama, in a victory speech stated that he was deeply touched by the overwhelming endorsement he received from the grassroots of the NDC.

According to him, his election was a "call to duty and a call to action. Our party has spoken with one voice and I must say we are all winners”.

"I am deeply touched by the overwhelming endorsement I have received from the grassroots of our party," he said moments after the Electoral Commission declared the official results at the NDC's headquarters at Adabraka in Accra.
