Nyantakyi should not contest GFA presidency again – Fianko

Former Division One League Board Chairman, Kwame Ntow Fianko, says he does not side with people urging the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, to contest the next GFA presidency in 2019.

He told Onua FM Thursday that he does not expect Mr Nyantakyi to seek re-election as he has had enough time to do his best for football administration in Ghana.

“Kwesi has done enough; he took Ghana to the world cup for the first time, he gave GFA an air-conditioned bus for the first time, he has achieved a lot as FA president. But he is a human and can go wrong. So I don’t see the reason why some people are saying he should contest again. If he asked me I will tell him there’s no need to come back.

He said Mr Nyantakyi has had the longest tenure and achieved enough as FA president.

Mr Fianko explained that according to the amended laws of the FA, the president can appoint his vice and members of the management board but the law does not have any provisions for making the president have the vice resign or sacked.

“In the FA presidency, the person who had the highest number of time in office aside Kwesi was Mr. H. P. Nyametei (1960–66) even Ohene Djan spent three years and Nana Fredua Mensah (1966–70). So Nyantakyi has had the highest number of years and he has also had landmark achievement. He completed the FA building from a FIFA fund,” he stated.

He recognized that though Nyantakyi’s administration has done a lot for the development of football in the country, some people have also misused some FIFA funds.

Nyantakyi has held several international positions in football. His appointments cut across sub regional, regional to the international state.

These include President of West African Football Union Zone B, Football organizer at the 2012 London Olympics, Member of FIFA Associations Committee, Member of the FIFA Council and Vice President of the Confederation of African Football.
