New regions not for votes – Nana Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo says government did not create new regions recently to attract votes from Ghanaians.

He said the new regions were created to help ensure an efficient governance system and equitable development in the country.

“It was also to address the lack of a corresponding development to match the contributions of the northern part of the region to the country. So it was not to get votes from the people, it was a promise I made,” he pointed out.

The President disclosed this during a durbar of chiefs and people of Sefwi Wiawso as part of his two-day working visit to the new region.

He revealed that as part of efforts to fast track the administration of the region, some key staff of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) had been appointed to start work in the area.

“As you are aware, already the Regional Minister and his deputy have been appointed. Eight vehicles have also been provided to the RCC for its operations,” the President revealed.

He called for peaceful co-existence among the people in the new region and those in the Western Region, adding that “we are all part of one Ghana.”

The President assured the people that the deplorable roads in the new region, including Benchema-Osei Kojokrom, Enchi-Dadieso and Akontombra-Sefwi Wiawso roads, would soon be fixed, adding that some of the roads would be constructed under the Sinohydro projects.

The Paramount Chief of Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Area, Katakyie Kwesi Bumangama II, lauded the President for creating the Western North Region.

He explained that for the past 44 years, chiefs in the area have been yearning for the creation of the Western North Region but to no avail.

Katakyie Kwesi Bumangama II pointed out that the people of Sefwi and the Western North Region would forever be grateful to the current Akufo-Addo administration for the initiative.

Dan Botwe, Minister of Regional Re-organisation and Development, said the President exhibited rare political courage which served as motivation for all the stakeholders involved in the process of creating the new regions.
