The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), Nana Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what the CPP describes as ‘demeaning’ remarks made against it.

According to the party, it takes exception to comments from some members of the NPP, particularly Samuel Atta Akyea and Kwame Pianim, suggesting that it has failed, stating that the NPP has ‘crossed the boundary of respectful political discourse.’

She indicated that such remarks show the party’s dislike for its founder and the country’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

“In recent weeks, commentary from leading figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has crossed the boundary of respectful political discourse. While every party has the right to reflect on its internal challenges, it is both unacceptable and deeply disappointing to see the CPP, the very party that led Ghana to independence, used repeatedly as a symbol of failure.

“From Kwame Pianim's 'irrelevance' warning to Hackman Owusu-Agyemang’s references to 'CPP-ism,' and Samuel Atta Akyea’s assertion that 'God will not honour Pianim’s prophecy,' the tone of these remarks reveal more than political concern. It reveals a longstanding arrogance and dismissiveness towards Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and the millions who still believe in his ideals,” portions of the party’s statement read.

The statement, further highlighting the achievements of the CPP in advancing the country’s development into modern Ghana, lashed out at successive governments for what it said was their failure to build on the developments initiated by Dr Nkrumah.

“Factories built to empower the people now sit abandoned. The Abosso Glass Factory, GIHOC Fibre Products, Wenchi Tomato Canning, and Asutuare Sugar Plant are only a few examples of productive infrastructure left to rot while politicians make fun of the party that birthed them,” her statement added.

The CPP called for a political system devoid of insults and founded on respect, emphasising that it will “not be silent while its legacy is distorted. We will respond, not with insults, but with truth, with purpose, and with unwavering belief in Ghana’s ability to rise again.”

NPP Elders Must Stop Demeaning the CPP – Let This Be a Call to Renewal

In recent weeks, commentary from leading figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has crossed the boundary of respectful political discourse. While every party has the right to reflect on its internal challenges, it is both unacceptable and deeply disappointing to see the CPP—the very party that led Ghana to independence—used repeatedly as a symbol of failure.

From Kwame Pianim's “irrelevance” warning to Hackman Owusu-Agyemang’s references to “CPP-ism,” and Samuel Atta Akyea’s assertion that “God will not honour Pianim’s prophecy,” the tone of these remarks reveals more than political concern. It reveals a longstanding arrogance and dismissiveness towards Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the millions who still believe in his ideals.

You Cannot Rewrite History
The Convention People’s Party is not just a political organisation. It is the foundation upon which modern Ghana was built. It was the CPP that:

- Led Ghana to independence in 1957
- Built the Akosombo Dam
- Constructed Tema Harbour and the Motorway
- Initiated nationwide industrialisation
- Expanded access to education and health
- Fought for African unity and self-determination

Many of these achievements still serve Ghanaians today. Yet, instead of building on this legacy, successive governments—including the current administration—have allowed Nkrumah’s vision to decay.

What Have You Done With the Inheritance?
Factories built to empower the people now sit abandoned. The Abosso Glass Factory, GIHOC Fibre Products, Wenchi Tomato Canning, and Asutuare Sugar Plant are only a few examples of productive infrastructure left to rot while politicians make fun of the party that birthed them.

Let us be clear: this is not just disrespect to the CPP—it is a betrayal of Ghana’s potential. GhanaWeb and the Social Justice Movement-Ghana have both highlighted the shameful abandonment of Nkrumah-era industries. If these had been nurtured and expanded, Ghana would not be begging for jobs or loans today.

Stop the Bitterness. Face the Future.
These remarks by the NPP’s elders betray not just condescension—but unresolved bitterness toward Nkrumah’s legacy. It is time we rise above this. The work ahead is not about settling old scores. It is about confronting poverty, creating jobs, securing education, and ensuring every Ghanaian has dignity.

To use the CPP as a scarecrow while ignoring the collapse of your own internal cohesion is deflection—not leadership.

To All Nkrumaists: Let Us Rise
This must be a turning point. To those who believe in Osagyefo’s ideals—of African self-reliance, social justice, and unity—this is the moment to come home. The Convention People’s Party invites the youth, students, professionals, traders, farmers and all patriots to join in a revival of purpose.

We must modernise, re‑energise, and face forward. We must turn this ridicule into a movement. Ghana deserves better—and the CPP is ready to lead again.

A Call for Respectful Politics
True democracy is not about mockery. It is about choices, ideas, and integrity. The CPP will not be silent while its legacy is distorted. We will respond—not with insults—but with truth, with purpose, and with unwavering belief in Ghana’s ability to rise again.

As Nkrumah declared, “We have awakened. We will not sleep anymore.”

Let those words guide our actions—not only in the CPP, but across the nation.
