NPP’s Delta Force more than coup makers - Baba Jamal

Former Member of Parliament for Akwatia has likened members of Delta Force, vigilante group affiliated to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to “coup makers”.

According to Ahmed Ibrahim Baba Jamal, the group standing trial for assaulting a Security Coordinator, George Agyei must be made to face the full rigorous of the law to serve as a deterrent to others.

The former MP made the comment after a Kumasi Circuit Court sentenced the 13 members of Delta Force to a fine after they were freed from lawful custody by their colleagues.

They face a three-year jail sentence should they fail to pay the fine of GH¢24,000 each. They are also expected to appear in court on April 20, 2017, for the assault case.

Many including civil society groups, the United Nations and opposition political parties have condemned the action of the Delta Force in no uncertain terms and have called on President Akufo-Addo to ensure the rule of law works.

But Baba Jamal on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday blamed the leadership of the NPP for the conduct of the Delta Force.

He explained that the NPP in the 2016 electioneering campaign hailed the Delta Force when they engaged in illegal acts and are now an albatross around their necks.

The former Akwatia MP maintained that, efforts to punish members of the Delta Force engaging in lawless acts will be fruitless unless political hands within the governing NPP stop shielding perpetrators of such acts.

He alleged that some senior figures within the party continue to support the group despite public pronouncements by President Akufo-Addo condemning their activities.

Just like the court jailed the Montie three for threatening Supreme Court judges, the former MP said they expect a harsher punishment for the Delta Force who stormed the court

Baba Jamal added that the vigilante group standing trial should be treated like “coup makers” to ensure Ghana’s democracy is not undermined.
