The latest Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on Ghana’s election has activated a panic mode in the National Democratic Congress, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party has said.

Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako aka Chairman Wontumi, has noted that shortly after the EIU released a statement predicting victory for the NPP in 2020, senior members and executives of the NDC begun shivering and weeping like new-born babies.

“My insiders within the NDC told me that there was massive wailing at the party’s headquarters shortly after they read copies of the EIU report. I was told most of the executives who speak on radio were crying like babies who hadn’t had breastmilk. They appear tough when they talk on radio or tv but are soft insider. The report has broken them down and their spirits are not happy.

They were cursing their stars for supporting a chronic loser like John Mahama”, Chairman Wontumi said.

The EIU, has predicted that the governing NPP, will secure re-election in 2020. The Unit in its country report on Ghana which was released on May 13, 2019, they stated that it will be difficult for the opposition NDC under former President John Dramani Mahama, to portray itself as the better custodian of Ghana’s economy, especially as the country’s growth outlook looks fairly strong.

A portion of the research statement pointed out that “Nana Akufo-Addo, the president, and his NPP will see the country’s economic situation generally improve during the remainder of their terms of office. In the presidential election, it says Akufo-Addo will face a challenge from John Mahama— Ghana’s president from 2012 to early 2017, who was elected leader of the opposition NDC in February 2019.”

Responding to the research wok on Peace FM's News@6pm, the deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Peter Otokunor, noted that his party stands to benefit from the issues of corruption raised in the report against the NPP government in 2020.

Peter Otokunor, insisted that some aspects of the research like corruption will help them strategize towards election 2020. He insisted that it will be wrong for the NDC to rubbish the report in its entirety because there are ‘issues which should be considered’.

"They have raised critical issues which will help us in strategizing for 2020 and it will also form the basis for policy in those in government. We accept this research . . . things like corruption and others will come up and Ghanaians will hold Akufo-Addo accountable to it," he stated.

Over the years, the EIU, has been releasing similar reports and predictions on Ghana’s elections, which in a number of cases have turned out to be right
