Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, K.T Hammond has given reasons why Ghana needs a new Parliamentary complex including the fact that toilets assigned to members of the Legislature are always hijacked by visitors and journalists.

According to the lawyer cum politician, the situation is so uncomfortable and very worrying.

“Go to our washroom and you’ll find out that it is always full, visitors and journalists always take over the place making it difficult for us to use the place of convenience. We don’t even have a place to buy water in Parliament. Our cafeteria is equally filled with journalists and visitors whenever you want something to drink or eat. The other day I wanted to have a brief chat with someone before I move into the chamber but we couldn’t find a place to sit and had to call off the meeting. In my heart, I’m all for the construction of a new Parliament complex one that is multi-purpose. All the three arms of government except the Legislature which is the foundation of democracy have their building with the necessary ancillary facilities. We definitely need a new purpose-built Parliamentary complex and it certainly must be constructed one day.” He said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii sen show.

The Parliamentary Service Board has dropped the construction of a proposed 450 new chamber block for Members of the legislature.

This follows backlash from the public over the unveiling of the architectural design for the proposed new chamber by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye, on Friday, June 28, 2019.

The temporal halt over the decision to construct a new $200million chamber for the lawmakers is to afford the House an opportunity to engage the public further over the issue.
