The former Trade and Industry Minister under former President Mahama, Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah has stated that the problems greeted with the implementation of the free SHS was due to proper planning.

Speaking to Accra based Citi FM, Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah indicated that the ruling government has still missed the exact cost of the entire project due to lack of proper consultation and planning.

“Today that Free SHS has started, even the total cost is still to known and where the money is going to come from is still not known,”

Dr. Spio Garbrah noted that “the timing and execution of all these things have become a challenge partly because of the poor planning that took place and the very interesting promises which are not easy to execute.”

“When government got around to actually examining who should actually benefit from Free SHS, they realised that they could not give to all students so second and third-year students will have to pay their fees like normal.”

The President Akufo Addo yesterday September 12 launched the government’s educational flagship programme, free SHS policy.

Government has so far released a total of GHc 480 million to commence the implementation of the policy.

President Akufo Addo in his address at the launch of the policy at West Africa Senior Secondary School (WASS) in Accra revealed that government will financed the policy through the proceeds of the natural resources of the country.
