A former Chief Administrator at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, has been indicted in the 2016 Auditor General's report for illegally benefiting from a retirement package in excess of GHC50,000 and a VW saloon car.

According to the 2016 Auditor General’s report, the previous management of the referral Hospital awarded the package including the VW Passat saloon car to Prof. Afia Hesse without the approval of the Health Minister.

The Auditor General said the practice was in breach of Section 37 (6) of the Ghana Health Service Act on retirement packages.

At public hearings of the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, 11 March 2019, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Korle Bu, Dr Daniel Asare said the car has since been retrieved but Prof Hesse has refused to refund the GHC51,000 and challenged them to go to court to retrieve the money.

For his part, Health Minister, Mr Kwaku Agyeman Manu said the only option left for his ministry is to seek advice from the Attorney General to recover the monies.
