The Media Coalition Against Galamsey on Monday received assistance from two institutions in Accra to boost the successful implementation of its activities.

Goil Ghana Limited, distributors of petroleum products donated GhC10,000 worth of fuel coupons while the Globe Production, a theatre and drama production group will support the fight against the menace with the production of drama to educate the people on the need to fight the galamsey and all forms of illegal mining.

The fuel coupons would enable the members of the Coalition as well as other auxiliary groups in the team to visit locations in their fight against illegal mining throughout the country whenever there was a need.

Mr Marcus Deo Dake, the Head of Fuels and Marketing at Goil who made the presentation said it was part of the Company’s mission to operate in a safe and healthy environment and therefore the need to support the laudable initiative by the Coalition.

“We cannot sit by and watch unconcerned when the natural resources, including the land, water bodies and agricultural products were constantly being destroyed by the illegal mining operators.

We have therefore come to lend our support to the fight which would help all of us as Ghanaians wherever we find ourselves”, he added.

Mr Latif Abubakar, Chief Executive Officer of the Globe Production said the group believed in the power of theatre and drama and would therefore use them as the medium to promote the fight.

The group, he said would ensure that messages were centered around Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) as well as agriculture and that the performances which would be launched on August 26 and 27 would enable the people come to terms with the threats associated with the menace.

Mr Ken Ashigbey, the Chairman of the Coalition expressed gratitude to the donors and said, “As corporate Ghana, we all have a stake to ensure that the country becomes safe and that water bodies are clean for the safety of all”.

He said it was for that reason that the Coalition was formed with an aim of advocating for the end to illegal mining.

Mr Ashigbe, who is also the Managing Director of the Graphic Group of Communications said the Coalition had lined up and had embarked on various activities towards that effect, but needed more support to enhance its work and reach the set targets in the fight.

He therefore called on other organisations to help provide the needed support to enable the Coalition assist in the protection of the environment to boost the national economy as a whole.
