British High Commissioner to Ghana, Ian Walker has commended Ghana for its hard-earned reputation in the education sector.

According to him, the British High Commission has spent a lot of money in supporting education for the past fifteen years and is still working closely with the Ministry of Education for great improvement in the sector.

“Education is one of our main priorities. With the British High Commission, we work very closely with the Ministry of Education here in Ghana and in the last fifteen years, we’ve actually spent £250 billion in Ghana supporting education. It is something we care about greatly.”

Mr Walker encouraged Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of reading as it would help them achieve greater heights in life.

He said “nothing can be more important than reading. I think when someone can read, you can explore the world in quite a different way, you can unleash your imaginations and can really realize a lot of your potential”.

In an interview with the Head of Corporate Affairs, Veronica Ofosuhemaa Owusu-Ansah during the World Day Celebration, she noted that the Ghana Library Authority is revamping the 61 libraries they have across the regions and is looking forward to adding fifteen more so more people can have access to a library facility.

She noted that, the Ashanti, Eastern and Central Regions are the target for the allocation of the libraries yet to be established.

She also noted that, the Ghana Library Authority is developing an app which will enable them upload e-content of publishers’ books onto its website.

She said, “On the digital front, we are automating our system to the extent that when you have to visit our library in Wa and there is a particular book that you need there, you’d have to go on our app which is underway… if that book is there it’ll tell you that we have that book on the shelf, if it’s not there it will let you know so whether you’re going to visit or not”.

Veronica added that, the Authority is looking forward to collaborating with local publishers for the e-content of their books to feed the Ghana Library Authority App when its ready.
