Focus on the cedi, not me – Ofosu-Ampofo to Government

The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has admonished government to focus on arresting the cedi from further depreciating against dollar instead of him.

According to him, the ongoing investigation into comments attributed to him in a leaked tape is deliberate to divert attention from President Akufo-Addo’s bad governance style.

“These are diversionary tactics. We want to remain focus…very…very focus on our agenda of winning 2020.

“My only advice is that if there’s anybody to arrest and focus on, they should focus on the dollar that has escaped and it is running away and not focus on Ofosu-Ampofo. I am not a security threat to this country,” he told journalists after investigators over his alleged comments Thursday.

He said he is innocent of the charges leveled against him and that he has the necessary shock absorbers to withstand “this and so I am not worried at all.”

“ I believe that I have good conscience…I have been in politics for close to 30 years, occupied several positions [and] there’s no track in my reputation that I have even insulted anybody or acted against state authorities,” he affirmed.

Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, in the leaked tape, could be heard saying his approach to elections and security had changed completely in the wake of the violence that characterised the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

He further noted as the NDC’s strategy to regain power in 2020 lives of some members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) would be targeted. “We will go after them,” he said.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo was also heard on the leaked tape at a meeting giving directive for the EC chairperson Jean Mensa “to be taken to the cleaners.” He also endorsed the hurling of insults on the National Peace Council chairman Rev. Emmanuel Asante.

The NDC National Chairman is on a GH¢400, 000 bail after meeting the Police CID over the remarks on Monday.

He is to reappear before the police CID on Tuesday.
