‘Expect positive court outcome’

The Executive Director of West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), Emmanuel Bombande says Ghanaians should expect a positive outcome from the Supreme Court.

He also called for the strengthening of the country’s democratic system.

The ruling of the court, he said, would enhance the nation’s image rather than cause violence which would affect the integrity of the country.

He said after the Supreme Court ruling, the country should adopt measures to deepen the democratic system.

Mr. Bombande, in a presentation on the Supreme Court verdict at a meeting with heads of churches of the Christian Council, stressed the need for the nation to identify the root causes of conflicts rather than focus on the superficial issues.

The role of the church and its leaders in educating members on the need to maintain peace is much more important in recent times in averting conflict than embarking on diplomatic mediations after they erupt, he indicated.

The executive director urged the church leaders to remain united and speak with a common voice to avert the destabilization of the country.

He appealed to reverend ministers to educate the congregation to accept the Supreme Court verdict in the face of criticisms.

Rev. Prof Emmanuel Asante, on his part, appealed to church leaders to remain non-partisan.

He added that church leaders should use the pulpit to urge the congregation to accept the Supreme Court verdict.

Dr. Emmanuel Akewetey, Executive Director, Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), also stressed the need to dialogue to build consensus to bring purposeful and political reforms.

The heads of the member churches committed themselves to pray and fast for the nation before the ruling by the apex court and entreated leaders of the two major political parties to fulfill their pledge to accept the final ruling.

The Christian Council also tasked the security agencies, media, party supporters, as well as traditional leaders to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner ahead of the verdict of the court.
