East Mamprusi NDC youth protest over nomination of DCE

Nalerigu (NR), April 18, GNA - Some NDC youth in the Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency in the East Mamprusi District have rejected Mr. Adam Imoro, President's Nominee for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.

The youth, in a violent protest invaded the NDC party office in Nalerigu and burnt down a shed in front of the office, while others removed several NDC bill boards in the Nalerigu Township. The protests spread to Langbinsi and Sakogu, some nearby communities where the youth registered their discontent in a peaceful manner. Speaking to the GNA in separate interviews in Nalerigu at the weekend, the youth called on the President to withdraw the nomination of Mr. Imoro and replace him with Alhaji Ishmael Zakaria, who is a preferred choice of the constituency to bring peace to the area. They claimed that, Mr. Imoro is a stranger in the party and that he joined the NDC only in September 2008 when he realized that the party was on the verge of winning power.

The youth threatened to advise themselves if the President failed to replace the nominee, who they said was also inexperienced. They said Alhaji Zakaria had been an active and a known member of the NDC for a very long time including the PNDC era, who according to them had a lot of experience both in party work and how to man the district.

Mr. Bukari Ibrahim, a sympathizer of the NDC in Nalerigu told the He said the action of the youth was reported to Nalerigu police who responded swiftly and brought the situation under control only for the youth to continue the action on Friday morning. Police sources at Nalerigu confirmed the protests in Sakogu and Langbinsi and told the GNA in telephone interview that security personnel were detailed to the two communities to keep law and order. The source said advised residents not to panic, but go about their normal businesses without fear.
