Dekyembour: Galamsey’ll die under me – DCE

Seth Birikorang Fosu Seth Birikorang Fosu

The newly-elected District Chief Executive of Dekyembour, Mr Seth Birikorang Fosu has expressed his readiness to combat galamsey or illegal mining in the district to support President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s campaign to save the environment and Ghana’s water bodies by uprooting galamsey.

Nana Akufo-Addo, shortly after assuming office in January this year launched an onslaught on galamsey. The war led by Lands and Natural Resources Minister John Peter Amewu has seen over 500 excavators and earthmoving equipment voluntarily withdrawn from galamsey sites so far.

Speaking to Class News after his endorsement by assembly members, Mr Fosu noted that galamsey would not thrive in his district.

“…For illegal mining and pollution of water, it will not go on under my watch. I’m going to support the government. Government has a programme for mining and that’s what we are going to provide every district. … For those polluting the water, there is a new commander in town and we’ll make sure we flush all of them out, for that I can assure,” he stated.

Mr Fosu noted that his endorsement by the assembly members came as no surprise to him.

“I know about 80 per cent of the assembly members; I’ve worked with them before and they know my capabilities. You’ll realise when my name came out there was no noise about it. That should tell you there was consensus. Although I’m happy about it, I’m not surprised.”
