The Yilo Krobo branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by its Member of Parliament, Magnus Kofi Amoatey; the party’s parliamentary candidate for the area, Albert Tetteh Nyakotey; party chairman, Narh Agbo; and other party executives on Wednesday, 13th May, 2020 donated various PPE to three health facilities in the area.

The donations made on behalf of the former president, HE John Dramani Mahama and former finance minister, Seth Terkper formed part of the continuous support the party is extending to frontline workers, institutions and the general public as part of its efforts to help combat the COVID-19.

Two health facilities in Yilo Krobo including the Somanya Polyclinic and the Somanya Health & Disease Control Centre and the Atua Government Hospital situated in the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency, took delivery of the items.

The items, which were jointly handed over to the facilities by the current and aspiring MP included NK95 nose masks, hand sanitizers, Veronica Buckets, examination gloves, face masks, surgical gloves, wash basins, waste bins, liquid soaps and rolls of tissue.

Reiterating Mr. Mahama's commitment to the fight against COVID-19, Mr. Amoatey said supporting health institutions in the fight against the coronavirus remained the party’s utmost unrelenting priority.

Describing the current covid-19 situation in the country as “serious,” the Law Maker said the current community spread of the virus was worrying.

“It is serious because now what we are observing is community spread which is more dangerous,” he observed. “That is what makes it serious.”

He expressed concern over the disregard for social distancing in many markets of the constituency especially as this may hinder the fight against the virus.

The Legislator believed authorities may not have another option but to close down the market in Yilo Krobo if persistent efforts to ensure and enforce social distancing protocols at the facilities are disregarded.

“I believe what may happen in Yilo Krobo is what is happening in other parts of the country. If our market patrons will not observe the pandemic protocols, there is need for us to close down the markets,” he opined hoping that the message of social distancing will go down with such an action.

“I’ll be the first to suggest that markets where the protocols are not being observed should be closed down,” he said.

He said though the Atua Government Hospital is in the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency, the team found it important to donate to the facility as the corona virus knew no boundaries, especially as health seekers from Yilo Krobo do access medical care at the Atua Government Hospital.

On his part, the Yilo krobo NDC parliamentary candidate, Albert Nyakotey who appreciated the efforts of Frontline Health workers in these critical time of the Corona Virus pandemic, congratulated and urged them to continue to save lives.

Receiving the donations on behalf the Atua Government Hospital, now a COVID-19 Isolation and Treatment Centre, the Pharmacy Manager of the facility, Pharm. Bertha Abakah posited that, no donation is too late considering the fact that the COVID-19 infection is still on the ascendancy.

She was grateful for the gesture from the former President and promised that she and her colleagues would continue to invest maximum efforts towards fighting off the deadly corona virus.

Medical Officer in charge of the Somanya Polyclinic, Dr. Wisdom Owulaku expressed his gratitude and that of the facility to the former President, the finance minister and the Yilo Krobo NDC, adding that the items would help them in the discharge of their work.

He disclosed that a total of 30 suspected cases had been recorded at the facility with no confirmed cases.

Magnus Kofi Amoatey and Albert Nyakotey had already made similar donations including cash and PPEs and provided COVID-19 education to the people of Yilo Krobo.
