Committee formed to oversee activities of NPP at Asante-Bekwai

Bekwai (Ash), June 10, GNA - Concerned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asante-Bekwai constituency have set up a three-member interim committee to oversee the daily activities of the party in the constituency.

This followed the disintegration of the executives of the party before, during and after the 2008 general election. The committee has Mr Patrick Adu-Gyamfi as chairman, Mr Yaw Bio, secretary and Mr Fred Nkansah, organizer. Confusion arose among the executives and some members of the party when they passed a no-confidence vote in the then MP, Mr Ignatius Poku Adusei, who wanted to contest the election for the third time. This prompted Mr Joe Osei-Owusu to contest the election as an independent candidate and he won the seat.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Bekwai on Monday, Mr Bio said the formation of the committee became necessary to ensure that day-to-day activities and structures of the party, which had been dormant for sometime now, are rekindled. Mr Bio said the committee had held its first meeting with supporters of the party to prepare them for NPP's national congress in July. He said the meeting also discussed ways of opening a new party office since the building that used to house the office had been taken over by the landlord.

Mr Bio said due to the fact that the Bekwai constituency is one of the strongholds of NPP in the country, the members needed to strengthen its structures and support base in preparation for the next general election in 2012 for the party to be return to governance. He appealed to supporters and sympathizers of the party to remain united and committed to the ideals of the NPP, adding that members would soon go to congress to elect new officers for the constituency. 10 June 09
