81,960 voters register in Asante-Akim North Constituency

A total of 81,960 voters registered in the Asante-Akim North Constituency in the just ended nationwide Biometric Voter Registration exercise conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Compared with the 2008 electoral roll, this showed a reduction in the area’s voter population by 1,499.

Mr Lukas Yiryel, the Municipal Electoral Officer, told the Ghana News Agency that 26,789 applicants were captured during the phase one of the exercise with 25,411 registering in the phase two.

The third phase recorded 18,388 voters and 11,372 voters during the final stage.

He spoke of a possible mop-up at the Urban Council Registration Centre to enable some officials who could not register during the exercise to do so.

Mr. Yiryel said other members of the public who for genuine reasons could not take part, could take advantage this.

This however, would not be done on case by case examination to determine whether an applicant really deserves a second chance.

There is consensus among the political parties that the exercise should not be extended, he added.**
