4-year tenure of presidents not enough to deliver meaningful impact - Goodluck Jonathan

Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has stated that the current four-year presidential term practiced in countries like Nigeria and Ghana is insufficient for leaders to make meaningful developmental impact.

Speaking at an Executive Leadership Retreat in Ada on Thursday, April 24, 2025, he noted that the current tenure makes it difficult for a newly elected president to implement long-term policies.

"The tenure of presidents is so short in Africa, it's only Nigeria and Ghana that have four years tenure of presidency. Most countries have five years what can somebody do in four years. If you're a new person and you just come in you need about a year as a learning curve before you will adjust work for two years the next year is election year so the time to really move your country is very limited", he noted.

He also emphasised the importance of appointing competent individuals to critical government positions.

"Getting the competent hands to man major departments of government is critical and it's lacking in most of countries, you can never get 100% because you must balance the situations but the economic team must be made up of top class people that can push and they too must lead because leadership is not the president alone the ministers the junior ministers and others holding executive positions", he added.
