4 things you didn’t know about the late Amissah-Arthur

The death Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has brought grief and sadness to the majority of Ghanaian.

The former vice president was reported dead on Friday, June, 29, 2018, although what actually led to his death is not known for now.

Widespread reports suggest he fainted at the Air Force Gym in Accra Friday morning during a workout and could not recover from his unconsciousness.

He was later rushed to the 37 Military Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Many people knew the late Amissah-Arthur as Ghana’s vice president during John Mahama‘s reign as Head of State.

However, here are four things you may not have known about the late former vice-president:

1. He used to be a lecturer

Not many people know of this but, Amissah-Arthur was actually a lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG) in the late 80s.



He lectured at the Department of Economics at the University of Ghana for eight years, between 1980 and 1988.

But before then he also used to lecture in Nigeria, where he was a lecturer at the Department of Economics, Anambra State College of Education, Awka, Anambra State (August 1981 – July 1983).

2. He‘s worked as a consultant to the World Bank

The late Amissah-Arthur was not only known in Ghana as a great economist, but also his reputation in Africa and across the world was highly rated.

Before venturing into full-time politics, the 67-year-old used to work as a consultant for the World Bank in The Gambia. He also worked with the Netherlands government as a consultant to execute certain projects in Ghana.



3. He served as Governor of BoG

The late Amissah-Arthur‘s rich CV also includes his stint with the Bank of Ghana (BoG), where he once served as Governor.

He was appointed as Governor of the BoG in 2009, during the late Prof. Evans Atta-Mills‘ time as President of Ghana.

It was a position he held until 2012 when he resigned after being nominated by then John Mahama to become Vice-President of the country.

4. He’s an alumni of Mfantsipim

Did you also know which secondary school the former Vice-President attended?

Actually, he attended Mfantsipim School in the Central region. At Mfantsipim, the late Amissah-Arthur obtained his GCE Ordinary Level in 1969 and the GCE Advanced Level in 1971, before advancing to the University of Ghana for his tertiary education.
