Some 50 youth leaders from five districts in the Volta Region have undergone a day’s seminar on comprehensive sexual health education in Ho.

The participants were from Akatsi North, North Dayi, Ho, Afadzato South and Central Tongu Districts.

The seminar, on the theme, “Sustaining SRH Education Through Effective Youth Participation” had support from the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council (VRCC) with funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFP).

It was to equip young leaders in the Districts with the requisite skills to influence and impact sexual behaviour change among the youth in rural and peri-urban communities.

Mr. Yaw Semorde, Regional Manager, National Youth Authority (NYA), admonished the youth to be circumspect with issues about their sexuality not to disrupt their “way to the top”.

Madam Gloria Agbe-Carbonu, Physician Assistant, OLA Clinic in Ho, encouraged parents to be attentive to the sexual health issues of their wards.

She said though society frowned on early sex, not much was being done to educate the youth on the negative implication of indulging in sexual activities naively and urged parents to help their children discover themselves.

Madam Agbe-Carbonu advised young girls to take good care of the female reproductive organ because it was very delicate and could easily get infected.

Madam Victoria Odurowa Fato, UNFPA Focal Person, VRCC, said the focus of UNFPA was to ensure that every pregnancy was wanted, every childbirth safe and every young person’s potential fulfilled.

She said UNFPA worked at improving reproductive health and rights and to reduce maternal mortality especially among adolescents.
