Former CEO of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Felix Anyah has called for a multi-disciplinary approach to deal with the abuse of antibiotics in Ghana.

According to Dr Anyah, many Ghanaians have been misusing anti-biotics for far too long, resulting in their bodies building resistance against the drug.

“Most antibiotics are not working again for many reasons. People get easy access to antibiotics, there’s really no control at various levels, people self-medicate, people don’t diagnose well at various levels, in the house, in the hospitals.”

The founder of Holy Trinity Spa and Health Farm added that another factor that had resulted in the inefficiency of antibiotics is that the drug is used for the treatment of ailments that don’t necessarily require them.

He noted that many patients die in hospitals because their bodies resist the antibiotics prescribed for them.

Dr Anyah was speaking to the media on the sidelines of a business dinner organized for doctors by Holy Trinity Medical Centre as part of a public-private partnership to seek solutions to various medical challenges.
