Sunyani health scheme registers orphans free of charge

Sunyani (B/A), Jan 29, GNA - The Sunyani Municipal Mutual Health Insurance Scheme on Monday registered 75 inmates of three orphanages located in the Municipality free of charge to enable them to enjoy the benefits of the scheme.

Thirty-two of the inmates were registered at the Compassion Is Love In Action Orphanage at Yawhima, 20 at Hanukkah Children's Home at Baakoniaba and 23 at the Centre For Women and Children's Association based at Zongo in Sunyani.

Speaking to newsmen, Mr. George Oppong Danquah, Public Relations Officer of the scheme, said the exercise formed part of the scheme's social responsibility towards the under-privileged. He said it was also aimed at providing the correct data on each of the beneficiaries to enable them to access quality healthcare without paying any premium.

The public relations officer noted that since the implementation of the scheme two years ago, the Sunyani Municipal Health Insurance Scheme had laid a very firm foundation for itself in managerial, financial and material terms and was well placed to rope in more people to join the scheme.

Mr. Kwame Gyamfi, Scheme Manager, observed that since children were the future leaders of the nation there was the urgent need to ensure their socio-economic well being, adding, denying them their right to health was tantamount to derailing the nation's progress. The exercise, he stressed, would be sustained until the inmates became economically independent and encouraged the management of other orphanages to take advantage of the exercise and make the necessary arrangements to guarantee the membership of inmates.

Father Gideon Acheampong, caretaker of Compassion Is Love In Action Orphanage thanked them for the gesture, saying the initiative would save them from spending 100,000 cedis on each child a day on their healthcare. 29 Jan 07
