Corporate organisations urged to support children with cancer

Mrs Lavinia Enim, Founder of Little Angels Trust, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has called on corporate organisations to come to the aid of children suffering from cancer related diseases.

Mrs Enim said children with cancer could be spared from some of the effects of the most intensive treatment if the disease is diagnosed early and treatment begins properly.

She made the call in interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra at a health and safety walk to create childhood awareness.

The walk which saw the presence of the Police started from Circle Obra Spot through some principal streets of Accra to the Korle-Bu Children’s Ward.

The NGO organised a party for the children and donated items including Christmas toys, biscuits, assorted drinks, and toffees.

She said one of the most fundamental approaches to closing the survival gap for children with cancer in resource-poor and resource rich countries, is early detection of the disease.

Mrs Enim noted that public education and awareness campaigns could increase the rate of early diagnosis in low and middle-income countries.

She called for the need for national healthcare systems of many developing countries to be responsive to the needs of children with cancer and their families.

Mrs Enim said the organisation has for the past decade been donating to the children’s ward and the Accra Psychiatric Children’s ward as part of its corporate social responsibility in giving hope to children who are terminally ill.

She said the Trust had adopted and renovated the third floor of the Children's Oncology Cancer Unit of Korle-Bu, where most of the children need extra love, care and support.
