Mr Duncan, maybe you should have left this issue alone since it seems to me your finance background is weak. Public debt compromise two components, external and internal debt therefore if the CIA website states that the public debt is 76% of GDP of $ 37.68 billion, then the total debt of Ghana according to the CIA website should be $28.57 billion.
The external debt given by the CIA website according to you of $17.5 billion should be deducted from the total public debt and not added to it to give you the internal debt of $11.0 billion.
Whatever calculation number you get of the said 76% is the total national or public debt. You don't add the external debt given to the public debt since the external debt is part of the public debt.

The controversy about our debt is one of the foolishness happening in Ghana. It's all because of evil NDC perennial desire to suppress the truth. They are hiding something. Bank of Ghana should be publishing these figures monthly. How Ghanaians have allowed this foolishness to fester is a wonder. It's a no brainer... just festering out of laziness, docility and foolishness.

What truth are you talking about? So you also believe what Duncan has published? Please read again carefully his article and see the gross mistakes he has made. He is simply adding up figures when he should have been subtracting. From his figures which he claims he obtained from CIA, Ghana's total debt should be $28 billion. Check it out. The problem with people like you is that even if the bank of Ghana publishes the debt figures monthly as you suggest, you will still say that the figures are wrong because the NDC govt is behind them. Perhaps you will only believe the figures if they are the same as the almighty Bawumia proclaims.

Between the World Bank and the IMF, we would rather believe them, than believe what the Government of Ghana will tell us about the debt Ghana owes.
After all, the vast portion of debt payments go to them, and the Government is always required to report other debts it has assumed before they go begging them again, as they always do!
Greetings!

So can those of you who are whining the loudest put the argument to rest? You don't contend with someone's argument for the sake of it. Now what is Ghana's total debt please tell us. Ghana, a failed nation under Mahama .

I am not saying Mahama is right. It's just that Mr Duncan is wrong on what public debt or National debt is. This is just basic economics. National or public debt is internal plus external debt of a nation. You don't add external debt to national debt, that will be double accounting as an Accountant will say.
I am a staunch Mahama critic but that does not mean I have to be dumb or close my eyes to plain mistake.

Pubic debt and external debts are not the same.Sarpong and colleagues are beating about the bush. Google to find out the meaning the two debts. Ghanaians are so sure of the english language we use. If the two debts are the same, why do we work out public debt from GDP and external debt from international trade? External debt comprises private and national debt. That does not mean that public debt is part of external debt. Any one arguing should go and find the meaning because they are not the same.

The statement that public or national debt is 76% of national debt does not mean we work public debt out of GDP. What it simply means is that our debt as a country is 76% of our total production.
If you say we work out our national debt out of GDP, that means without GDP figure, we cannot figure out our public debt. This shows that you are a complete illiterate and don't even know what public debt is.
Public debt is what as a nation, we owe to people and organizations both in Ghana and outside Ghana.
Nowhere have I or anybody said here that external debt and public debt are the same. What we have said is that, external debt is part of public debt and the other part is referred to as internal debt. You need to let somebody read things and explain it to you because your understanding of English is limited.

Duncan Kusi,
Do not beat yourself overly hard about this one.
Trust us on this!
We all make mistakes, as you know!
Reading the comments, it is clear to us a lot more people have learned important lessons about the "debt", and other matters affecting governance.
That is the more important thing, especially going forward.
We trust that you have been responsible to the best of your abilities, even if the numbers exclude other portions of Ghana's debt obligations.
As far as we can tell, seems to us, it is the Government that has failed in its "communicative" duties. The idea is, on this topic at least, it is not enough for Government to give a figure, and then walk away.
It did not help anyone for Mr. Mahama to throw out a figure and insist that the is debt "since independence. (See see the foolishness and attempt to confuse people in all of that).
None of that means a hoot to critical minds!
Nor is it good governance.
On this matter, the serious government must explain to critical minds where Ghana's been going such as relate it in historical terms, and as adjusted by GDP/GNP/GINI, etc.
That is Terpker's (and Mr. Mahama's) job!
But, the last we heard, Mr. Terkper, the analyst, if he knows what he ought to be doing, was selling a tax hike to Ghanaians, a political act, which is not his JOB!
Greetings!
