It is a fact that a person in his 70’s is likely to be diagnosed with all kinds of illnesses and even die than someone in his 50’s. I am sure Nana Addo would admit that he may not be as sharp in his thinking as he was say 20 years ago.
Sure, it was dumb and foolhardy for the country to have voted for Mills when the whole world knew he was unhealthy and dying. I think doing same with Nana Addo would be repeating the same mistake, that is why NPP needs to wake up and rally behind a younger and smart guy like say Bawumia.

Minimum age requirement is the most common. But in the case where there is upper limit for age in pursuing that Office, practical, pragmatic wisdom is employed to excuse those who might be too old to bear the pressures of the job.
Surely, the mental acuity and physical health of individuals vary, there is a sensible set of attributes that need be looked at for the complete eligibility of anyone aspiring to become a Predident. Apart from what we could gather about the individual, the very state of the Nation and the enormity of the task at hand in every period could partly determine whether or not a certain advanced age could stay in top of issues.
In a period of little stress in the Nation's Economic and Social conditions, we could tolerate someone with a very advanced age, or another of much lower age below average, close to the minimum. But Ghana's situation now demands only the very fit, mentally and physically.
Nana fits best the role of a supporting out-of-office elder Statesman. He could be easily worn out by the stressful demands of that Office. Just look at how long he needed for recuperation abroad, after the exhaustion from the Supreme Court Election challenge case.

Nana would be the first to admit that he has lost most of his momentum and his work rate has diminished drastically. He is not as sharp as he used to be and in many ways a pale shadow of the Nana we knew in the 1980s. Interestingly, I visited Zimbabwe and had the chance to visit the oldman and my friend, it is sad that all the members of cabinet were younger than Mogabe. The whole scenario was like a headteacher-student relations and lets avoid it my friends.

It is likely to arouse protests from many Civil Rights advocates and others who are particular fond of a candidate, whenever age is focused on as a negative attribution to derail that person's political ambitions.
However, a realistic objective assessment would reveal that certain risks are inherently associated with the age factor. If we are talking about an advanced age, senility could more likely cause laxity in the politician's show of active functional awareness in all the issues. That leads to excessive delegation of duties and loose oversight of subordinates.
Then, also comes the question of mental acuity needed to make apt decisions in a timely manner. We could claim as much fitness as we want for a senile person, but the fact remains that the State of affairs of the constituency he or she is supposed to represent partly determines how much physical pressure is brought to bear on the Person, and we could be more comfortable with a vibrant younger representative who'd be physically up to the job, exceptions nothwithstading.
If it is a much younger, youthful person, below, say, 30 yrs., we generally assume the person would lack experience in how to relate to stakeholders, and level-headedly make critical decisions.
In both cases, we know there could be exceptions. Nevertheless, in Nana's case, he has been frequently flying outside the Country for Medical reasons the details of which are kept out of public knowledge in conformity with his privacy rights. But so did Arthur Mills behave only to succumb in the middle of his term. Again, Nana did show certain inexplicable aloofness in his tenure as the Attorney-General that led to the failure of the State to fully and fairly handle many very important criminal cases, and various Business negotiations between the Nation and some Business entities, especially, foreign firms.
The only excuse that every serious investigation might be able to allow Nana in all those failures is simply that he was too senile to stay on top of the cases, other than that he would deserve the alternative worse tag of being inept, if not cutting slacks to the culprits for other personal self-serving reasons.
We would rest unperturbed by a candidate's advanced age or immaturity only if he or she has demonstrated beyond doubt that he or she is capable of excelling in his or her Office. Nana has not demonstrated that level of achievement.
Nana only rides on the crest of opportunistic popularity, in the absence of any real achievement in Public Service.
So, yes, age has a whole lot to do with National leadership. The Nation cannot afford expensive Medical Bills with frequent foreign treatments, frequent Predidential funerals, and lack of adequate supervision of subordinate Staff. We cannot also keep repeating the errors of letting inexperienced puerile youths handle critical National issues, as hapzardly as been observed with the current Administration. A certain healthy mix of the ages is very necessary.
