Many media groups are not even aware that when they publish classified government materials and documents that it is wrong and criminal to do just so.
Even though we have a constitutional right under section
21(1) f of the 1992
constitution, this right has to be operationalized through the passage of the FOI Bill which is still languishing in parliament.
You are right, and many of these media houses are so reckless in their reportage by publishing these classified documents.
Until an FOI bill is passed into law, and media houses write to obtain information under the disclosure act, what they are doing currently is tantamount to criminality and they can run into the law based on their reportage.
Of course, that puts the onus on parliament to act to pass the bill under consideration at their end.
