We shall revolt against the police if they attack us – NDC group

A member of the Communications Team for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elikem Kotoko, has threatened the party will revolt against the Ghana Police Service should they try to prevent them from demonstrating against government.

According to Elikem Kotoko, any move by the police to harm the demonstrators in any way will result in a rebellion, since the masses outnumber the police force.

“The masses are more than their numbers and we are issuing this to them whether they take it as a threat or not, we the masses will also revolt against them should they want to come and attack or want to do anything against these innocent people”, Elikem cautioned.

The NDC had to call off a planned demonstration against the removal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwah on Friday, June 29, 2018.

Debunking any claims that the demonstration was called off due to pressure from the police, Elikem Kotoko intimated that that action was taken out of respect for the late former Vice President, Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, who passed on Friday morning.

He also chided the police for getting involved in political affairs and advised that they take off their uniforms if they are interested in politics.

“We would like to put on record that it is not the police warning that is actually deterring us or making us call off the demonstration. We are actually also warning the police that they should stay off politics. If they want to become politicians, then they should take off their clothing and become politicians”, he added.



Background


President Akufo-Addo on Thursday dismissed Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwah.

Their removal was based on recommendations from the committee that investigated corruption and misconduct allegations against them.

Some concerned workers of the Electoral Commission in July 2017 petitioned the President and the Chief Justice to begin impeachment processes against Mrs Osei.

They accused Mrs Osei of taking unilateral decisions without recourse to the appropriate departments of the EC, or even her deputies.
