'Vengeful' Amidu as Special Prosecutor bad – Amaliba

Martin Amidu’s decision to accept to be the Special Prosecutor in Ghana is surprising, Abraham Amaliba, a private legal practitioner and Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said.

According to him, the appointment is "bad" because Mr Amidu is "vengeful" and "vindictive".

“I was surprised that Amidu accepted this appointment because Amidu brought out a stinker of a letter criticising the way some people he called cabals within the presidency tried to water down the effects of the Act,” he said on TV3’s New Day on Saturday, 13 January 2018.

He added: "The office will need somebody who is not openly biased towards one. I have no question about his competence but the office needs a person who is not vengeful and vindictive.

“Amidu is reported to have openly said he will fight the NDC with his last blood, now, you put this person as the SP. It is an open secret that he is a card bearing member of NDC but he is an estranged member of the NDC. I think the decision to appoint him is a bad one because he is one-sided.”

On Thursday, 11 January 2018, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo named Mr Amidu, a former Minister of Justice and Attorney General under the John Mills administration as the Special Prosecutor.

The Attorney General, Gloria Akuffo, nominated Mr Amidu and his nomination was accepted by Nana Akufo-Addo.

Mr Amidu will carry out the extraordinary responsibility of independently fighting corruption.

He will have the full authority to initiate investigations into all suspected corruption-related offences of all persons in public service.
