A cross-section of Ghanaians have expressed worry about a proposed military agreement between the United States of America and Ghana, which allows the former unfettered access to some facilities close to the Kotoka International Airport.

The agreement which has been presented to parliament and is alleged to have been leaked by the minority, will among other things exempt the US from paying tax on equipment imported into the country. It further permits the military to set up a telecommunication system on Ghana’s radio spectrum for free.

The issue has generated some heated debate among the two major political parties in the country, with the NPP accusing the Mahama-led administration and its Foreign Affairs Minister, Hannah Tetteh of signing the alleged MoU in April 2015, therefore binding Ghanaians and the current government to the deal.

But speaking to www.ghanaweb.com, some agitated Ghanaians have expressed worry about the long-term effect of the renewal of the contract. According to them, the deal was not in the country’s best interest. A clear indication that the US stands to gain more and was taking advantage of Ghana. They further called on their representatives in parliament to reject the proposal so calm can be stored in the country.
