Record scoring Ghanaians in Europe’s top five leagues

Jordan has scored 24 goals in the EPL Jordan has scored 24 goals in the EPL

A quick exchange of passes in the Watford box ends up in a sleek pass to the unmarked Ayew who takes two touches before curling it beyond the reach of the Watford goalkeeper.

With that quality goal as described by The Guardian, Jordan Ayew broke some personal records.

The goal which was his ninth in all competitions for Palace is the highest number of goals he has scored in a single season in English football. Ayew previously played for Swansea and Aston Villa.

The goal also took Ayew’s tally to 8 this season which is more than he scored in previous seasons.

But the record that perhaps will most likely gladden his soul most is the equalization of the record set by the legendary Tony Yeboah.

Yeboah’s 24 goal tally which made him the highest Ghanaian scorer in the EPL has been equalled by Ayew who will most definitely set a new one before the season ends.

Yeboah’s 24 goals came in just 47 matches for Leeds United whereas Ayew needed 146 games to reach similar feat.

With Ayew now level pegging with the legendary Yeboah, ghanaweb.com brings you up to date with Ghanaian players who are top scorers in the four major European leagues.

Tony Yeboah – German Bundesliga

The EPL isn’t the only league that experienced Yeboah’s heroism, the Bundesliga too.

Yeboah is regarded as one of the players who opened Bundesliga doors for other Africans with their astonishing performances.

Yeboah scored 96 goals in 223 matches for both Frankfurt and Hamburg and that record till date remains the highest by a Ghanaian player in the German league.

Andre Ayew French Ligue 1

The Ayews are a football royalty and their imprint on Ghana football will take forever to erase. The family currently has Ghana’s leading scorer in French league history and Premier League history.

Andre Ayew’s 47 goals which came in 182 appearances for Marseille and Lorient makes him the record scorer in French football.

Kevin-Prince Boateng – Italy Serie A

The Italian league has been a home of some of Ghana’s finest players. Stephen Appiah, Abedi Pele and Asamoah Gyan are just a few of many Ghanaian players who used Italian football to showcase their gift to the world.

The likes of Kwadwo Asamoah, Agyemang Badu, Alfred Duncan and host of others still ply their trade in the league that has recently been hit with cases of the coronavirus.

With their unquestionable talent and consistent performances for their respective clubs, the players have become ambassadors for Ghana but the person whose goalscoring instincts got the country’s name on the lips of commentators and fans is the controversial Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Boateng is the highest Ghanaian scorer in the Italian football with a total of 17 goals for AC Milan, Sassuolo and Fiorentina.

Thomas Partey – Spanish La Liga

Until recently, Ghana did not really have a rich history of player excellence in the Spanish La Liga.

The last few seasons have seen the influx of some Ghanaian players in La Liga with Thomas Partey leading the pack.

In the context of Ghanaian players in Spain’s league, Thomas Partey is somewhat of a veteran having spent almost nine years with Atletico Madrid.

Salisu Mohammed, Joseph Aidoo and Iddriss Baba are three Ghanaian players enjoying consistent football in the ongoing La Liga season.

Partey is unsurprisingly Ghana’s lead scorer in the league’s history with 15 goals.
