Reclassify, redesign Accra-Tema motorway – BPS to government

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has entreated the government to re-engineer and reclassify the Accra-Tema motorway in order to solve the numerous road accidents and related deaths associated with it.

Key among the suggestions by the BPS is for the government to “redesign and reclassify the motorway to an urban highway, and lace it with traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, bus stops and allow for arterial and local roads to link”.

This was contained in a letter addressed to the Ministry of Roads and Highways by the Executive Director of BPS, Nana Yaw Akwada on Sunday, 14 April 2019.

The BPS arrived at the conclusion following a survey conducted between January 20 and March 31 about the Accra-Tema motorway, which is also known as Kwame Nkrumah motorway.

The Bureau said it “observed very disturbing developments along the 19-kilometre express route”.

The BPS further admonished the government to attend to the following:

-Redefine, with immediate effect, the buffer zone along the motorway and maintain same by removing or relocating all encroachers; be it state or private facility.

-Provide effective all-year round delineation systems with accompanying maintenance programme considering the high volume of traffic on a daily basis estimated at 65,000 vehicles daily (2008).

-Provide dedicated police patrol services to enforce traffic regulations on speeding and traffic obstructions in addition to escort/security services for broken down vehicles.
