The Mayor of Accra has said only the Adabraka suburb of Accra was flooded in the torrential rainfall which lasted the entire Monday night.

The claim by Mohammed Adjei Sowah is in sharp contrast with stories that have been shared on social media platforms by Ghanaians across the capital.

There are credible reports that areas such as Ashongman, Dome, Klagon, Madina and the Mallam junction area are heavily flooded by the Monday downpour.

Speaking to Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Tuesday, the Mayor said he and his team will hit the streets today and access the extent of the damage and provide assistance to victims.

“We have educated a lot of the communities to relocate to some particular areas when the rains are heavy. We have asked them to move for security reasons. There are some families who do not want to move to safe grounds when the rains are heavy.

“They are rather interested in protecting their belongings rather than their own lives. I visited other areas as well…it was only the Adabraka area that got flooded. Some people are living in low land areas and that is why they are mostly affected by the floods. We are doing our best to desilt the drains. We are looking at having storm drains at some areas…Adabraka Sahara is one of such areas,” he said.

He noted flooding in the capital appears minimal now because the city authority has been working hard at it.

“It has rained heavily on several occasions in this year and this is the first time we’ve recorded a flooding case in my jurisdiction. This is not to say we are proud of it but we are doing our best to make sure there is no flooding at all”.
