Perpetrators of banking crisis will face justice – President Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says his government has begun the prosecution process for persons he described as “responsible” for the banking sector shakeup.

His comment follows the arrest of founder of the now-defunct UT Bank, Prince Kofi Amoabeng, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of defunct Beige Bank, Michael Nyinaku.

Both have been charged with stealing and money laundering. They have been accused of allegedly stealing GH¢390million and $8.6 million belonging to customers of the bank.

The two pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against them when they were summoned before an Accra Circuit court today.

Following the process, President Akufo-Addo maintains that offenders will face the full course of the law should they be found guilty.

In a Tweet he said: “We have begun bringing those responsible for the banking crisis to justice. We have one case in court, and if prima facie evidence of criminality is found in the other ongoing investigations, which, according to my information, is likely, then the perpetrators of the crisis, i.e. both regulators and individuals, will face justice soon.”
